The Cambridge English Qualifications (YLE) exams are well known around the world and provide objective confirmation of the completion of learning at a certain level.  Below is a brief summary of the exam levels in relation to the Council of Europe (CEFR) level scale:

Pre A1 Starters
Recommended age: 8-10 years
Level: Preliminary (initial) preparatory

What can you expect?
– A positive first impression of the language test
– Understanding of basic English on the Internet/books/movies and language production
– Your child will learn to spell words
– Child-friendly test format

A1 Movers
Recommended age: 9-11 years old
Level: Beginner (basic) = A1 according to the Council of Europe Levels
What can you expect?
– Encouraging your child to use English in everyday situations
– Understanding longer sentences and talking about simple topics
– Child-friendly test format

A2 Flyers
Recommended age:10-12
Level: Elementary (basic higher) = A2 according to the Council of Europe Levels

What can you expect?
– Your child will understand simple English used in everyday situations
– Your child will learn to independently write or tell a short story in English or ask questions or use the past tense
– Child-friendly test format

A2 Key for Schools (KET)
Recommended age: 10-12

What can you expect?
– Exam format suitable for teenagers
– More complex written and oral statements
– Being able to take part in everyday conversations in English

B1 Preliminary for Schools (PET)
Recommended age:13-14 years old

What can you expect?
– Exam format suitable for teenagers
– The ability to express opinions and argument for and against
– Reading articles
– Independently writing letters and e-mails on everyday topics
– Communicating in everyday life situations

B2 First for Schools (FCE)
Recommended age: 15 to 18 years old
What can you expect?
– Exam format suitable for teenagers
– Confirmation of language proficiency at an intermediate level
– The ability to communicate independently and effectively in English
– The ability to express your opinion and present various arguments using grammar and vocabulary at an intermediate level
– The ability to write letters, reports, or stories
